Ludwig II = "Mad" King Ludwig ruled Bavaria for 23 years until his death in 1886 at the age of 41. Rather than deal with politics in the Bavarian capital Munich, Ludwig frittered away most of his time at his family´s hunting palace, Hohenschwangau. He spent most of his adult life constructing his fanciful Neuschwanstein castle - much like a kid builds a tree house on a neighboring hill.
After being picked up at your Salzburg Hotel, you will leave Austria and head West of the City towards Munich, Germany. About half way to Munich, at Irschenberg you get off the "Autobahn" and continue on scenic roads to Bad Toelz further on to Fuessen. Here close to the town of Fuessen is the location of the world famous Ludwig Castle Neuschwanstein. The whole visit of the Castle will take about 2 1/2 hours. Before visiting the Castle your guide will take you with special busses to Mary's bridge. Take a stunning photo of the Neuschwanstein Castle with the Mountains and lakes in the background. From the bridge it will be about 15 minutes to the Castle entrance (you can only visit the castle if you book this tour in time, if you want to be sure send an E-Mail first - often booked out). After the short tour of 30 minutes through the castle you will walk down by your own to the meeting point (Neuschwanstein Car Park).
The absolute highlight is definitely the view to the Castle and the fairy-tale setting of it. The setting of Neuschwanstein could not be more idyllic. Capture a few more pictures of Hohenschwangau Castle and the close lake before heading back to Salzburg.
